ROC chats to Gav Icon

Although we are primarily a mod and skinhead shop, that doesn’t mean our customers are limited to just mods and skinheads! A great customer and friend of the shop is DJ, musician and graphic designer, Gav Icon. He wears Fred’s, Penguin and puts his own spin on our polka dot and paisley shirts and is not afraid to stand out from the crowd. Something we really stand for here at Rebirth of Cool. Read on to get to know Gav…

Name?

Gav Icon

Describe your style?

My style is very much in line with the 60’s Garage Rock look. I really dig the look from back then. I like to mix it up a bit, borrowing a few ideas from the late 70’s punk style.

What’s your go-to piece in your wardrobe?

Me go to piece in my wardrobe is definitely me black and white polka dot shirt. The red and white polka dot shirt comes out when I hit the stage with Thee Icons.

When did you start collecting records?

When I was 13 I was in my uncles house in Finglas and he came into the room with a bunch of cases packed with records. I asked him what they were and he said “This is Punk Gav” . He had all these original pressings of Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, etc. After that I would start my collection in bits and pieces. I picked up records at garden fates, etc based on the covers. So I have a lot of random 80’s Post Punk stuff. Then took it seriously in the late 90’s.

How and when did you start DJing?

I started DJing in November 2007 and been doing it ever since. Playing trashy music for nearly 10 fabulous years. So yis can all blame Stef Murphy for offering me my first slot .

Tell us a bit about Gavin and Thee Icons?

I’m the singer and guitar player in Gavin And Thee Icons we are a trashy Garage Punk band. We are a 5 piece band with musicians from Dublin, Canada, USA and Waterford.
