ROC chats to The Hobbie Man

I first stumbled across The Hobbie Man while browsing through Instagram. His photos of soul nights popped up and caught my eye, I love the style and energy. He doesn’t just focus (excuse the pun) on soul nights though, there’s some stunning street photography, landscape and portraiture on his account too. I loved what he was doing so got him on board for our blog.

Check him out on Instagram @the_hobbie_man (www.instagram.com/the_hobbie_man)

Name:

Stephen – The Hobbie Man

How long have you been taking photos?
I’ve been taking photos for about three years now. I began with my dad’s point and shoot camera and got more and more into it. I then got my hands on an old film camera and began learning photography techniques. I fell in love with it! I’d definitely say I’m obsessed.

What’s your favourite part about shooting at soul clubs?
There’s so much I love about shooting at soul clubs. I get to do what I love, taking pictures and listening to great music. On top of that I’d have to say it’s the people. I’ve never met a nicer group of people. Soul nights are definitely my favourite nights out.

Are you into the scene yourself?
Well I’ve always been a music fan listening to a range of different music. Last Christmas I was working with my good friend Liam Evans and he told me I should come along to Pow City in the Thomas House where he was Djing and to bring my camera. I’ve been apart of the scene ever since.

What are your top 3 records?
Ah that’s a hard one there’s so many but I suppose
Lou Reed – Transformer is my go-to LP
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings – Rumours
And I love The Stooges- I Wanna Be Your Dog
There’s so many more I’d add to this list.

Describe your style?
Well if I’m not in my snickers you’d find me in a polo shirt with a pair of Levi’s and a nice jacket, maybe a Harrington, although I love my parka jacket my camera fits nice in the pocket.
